Brenda Smith Joins HDR as Health Principal in Atlanta
Brenda Smith, IIDA, CHID, LEED AP, has joined HDR as health principal in the Atlanta architecture studio. In this role, Smith will be a leader for HDR’s health practice in the Atlanta area, employing almost 30 years of experience in the healthcare and design industries.
Smith has experienced healthcare from many angles. She began her career as a nurse and then worked with design professionals from the client side as a design manager at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, ultimately arriving on the designer side of the relationship providing services to healthcare institutions.
“Each of those experiences have deepened my appreciation for wellness and well-being and kept me keenly interested in the full arc of health — from health education to the safe delivery of care,” Smith said. “I’ve often associated HDR with some of the most prestigious and influential healthcare projects in our industry; and there is a noticeable balance between design excellence, expertise and rigor. That attentive discipline drives quality and innovation for clients.”
“Brenda strives to create balance, designing comfortable environments for patients as well as enhancing the work experience and wellness of clinicians,” said Director of Health for the Eastern U.S. Sandy Tkacz, AIA, ACHA, EDAC. “Her experience with healthcare projects both large and small, and strength in leadership will empower our team and strengthen our ability to provide services to healthcare providers in Atlanta and the entire Southeast.”
Smith comes to HDR after 13 years at Perkins & Will where she was first the global practice leader for medical education and healthcare interiors team lead and then principal health practice leader. She is a certified Lean Green Belt and earned an associate degree in nursing at the Marshalltown School of Nursing before earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in interior design at the Pratt Institute.
