Bruce Flynn Pump Station Wins CMAA Project Achievement Award

The Construction Management Association of America selected the Bruce Flynn Pump Station Upgrades for its 2021 Project Achievement Award in the Water/Wastewater/Utility category with a construction value of less than $50 million.
CMAA’s Project Achievement Awards highlight industry projects that are true pinnacles of excellence and innovation. In 2021, CMAA recognized 14 projects for outstanding achievements in construction management. The awards presentation will take place Monday, Sept. 13 at 5 p.m. (EDT) during CMAA2021 in Philadelphia.
The Bruce Flynn Pump Station Project, located in the City of San Francisco, involved renovating an existing 25-year-old pump station to increase its conveyance capacity to 150 million gallons per day. Modifications included installing six new, higher capacity pumps, replacement of the bar screens, complete replacement of the odor control system and installation of a new remote monitoring and operating system.
The renovated pump station provides increased reliability during storm events. Despite the project team encountering unprecedented performance challenges resulting from the Coronavirus pandemic, the project was delivered on time and within budget using a Construction Manager/General Contractor contract, a first for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.
“Construction began in 2018 and was completed in September 2020,” said Thomas Haid, P.E., CCM, director of water construction services at HDR. “In addition to the anticipated operational constraints because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the city and its teaming partners faced construction challenges none had ever faced before. We’re very proud to be part of the team recognized with this industry award.”
