HDR Acquires Civil Engineering, Environmental Firm WRECO
HDR is expanding its technical excellence by acquiring WRECO, experts in civil engineering, environmental compliance, geotechnical engineering and water resources planning. Going forward, they will do business as HDR | WRECO.
Based in Walnut Creek, California, WRECO’s services include bridges and roadways, rail/transit, floodplain studies, stormwater management, coastal engineering, wetland restoration, storm damage repairs, pump stations, soil studies/foundation, biological studies and permitting, environmental site assessments and more. Founded in 1995, they’re known for providing innovative, sustainable solutions to communities throughout California.
“WRECO brings industry-leading knowledge, relationships and talent to our team,” said Dave LeCureux, HDR’s vice chairman and chief strategy officer. “Our partnership gives us a significant opportunity to grow our transportation and water resources services in the region. By enhancing our technical expertise in hydrology and hydraulics, we’re in an excellent position to move forward with municipal and state projects, complementing our full life cycle approach to infrastructure development.”
“The real motivation to make this move and to join HDR was based on finding the perfect home for our staff to grow and broaden their career paths,” said Han-Bin Liang, WRECO president. “It is an easy choice going from a small and minority-owned business to an employee-owned firm with the right culture and opportunities. We look forward to creating innovative solutions together, and we can’t wait to bring more outstanding projects to our existing and new clients.”
The two firms have worked together for over 20 years, including partnering on projects such as:
- On-Call Biological and Advance Mitigation Program Support Services for the California Department of Transportation
- Environmental phase of the Bay Area Regional Express Lane Network for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission
- Yerba Buena Island Southgate road realignment for the San Francisco County Transportation Authority
- 7th Street Grade Separation for the Alameda County Transportation Commission
A certified Bay Area Green Business, WRECO also has offices in Oakland, San Jose and Elk Grove.
HDR is the sixth largest 100% employee-owned firm in the U.S. by employee count; the acquisition of WRECO brings another 86 people to the company.
WRECO is the second California-based firm that HDR has acquired in 2021. In June, HDR brought on board WKE out of Santa Ana to enhance the firm’s multimodal transportation services.
