HDR Joins Coalition Signing COP26 Communiqué
HDR is one of more than 60 of the largest and most influential international architecture, engineering and construction firms that worked with organizers of the 2030 Challenge to issue a communiqué to government leaders headed to the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26).
The communiqué challenges them to improve their emissions reduction targets for the built environment. Professional organizations, such as the American Institute of Architect’s Large Firm Roundtable, of which HDR is a member, also signed the communiqué. The firms and organizations represent over $300 billion in annual construction and over 1 million building industry professionals worldwide.
“HDR endorses actions that move our industry towards significant reductions in carbon emissions,” said Eric Keen, HDR CEO.
According to a recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, rapid and large-scale reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are needed to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.
“Those responsible for planning, designing and constructing the global built environment are leading and transforming our sector, so that it is a major part of the solution to the climate crisis,” said Edward Mazria, Architecture 2030 founder and CEO.
By signing the communiqué, HDR reaffirms its commitment to the 2030 Challenge for reducing carbon emissions in the design and building professions, and to its internal commitment to reduce environmental impact through sustainable business practices.
From Oct. 31-Nov. 12, world leaders will convene in Glasgow, Scotland, for climate negotiations at COP26.
