HDR is pleased to announce that Kirk von Spaeth, AIA, has joined HDR as civic principal in the Los Angeles architecture studio.

In his new role, von Spaeth will focus on growing and developing HDR’s civic architecture practice in Los Angeles and beyond, with an emphasis on Southern California communities, State of California agencies and relevant federal opportunities. His responsibilities include pre-positioning with potential civic clients, intrapreneurial marketing of civic architecture capabilities and actively leading proposal and interview preparation.

Von Spaeth brings more than three decades of architecture leadership experience, last serving as sports studio leader for HNTB Architecture in Los Angeles. He spent the first 15 years of his career as an aquatics design and engineering consultant and was previously the Western region sports market leader for Cannon Design.

“In relation to the architecture profession, I'm most passionate about mentorship, because I owe it to all my mentors dating back to high school and college and at every step in my career to pay it forward." von Spaeth said. "Whenever I’m mentoring young professionals, I encourage them to seek out field assignments and be on the frontline of reporting the lessons learned back to the team.”

As a leader of civic market sector initiatives for the architecture business group in Southern California, von Spaeth’s top priority will be building and strengthening public sector community architecture and private sector development opportunities. He will also be involved in variety of project types, ranging from infrastructure with engineering, urban design and planning teams.

“Having served as project architect and project manager for university athletics, recreation facilities and campus master planning projects in the Southern California market, Kirk is well-suited to grow HDR’s civic architecture practice in Los Angeles,” said Usman Tariq, HDR West region architecture director.

Von Spaeth earned his bachelor’s degree in architecture from Rice University in Houston and has actively participated in the ACE Mentor Program of America. His aquatic design work has been featured on the cover of Athletic Business and been recognized by Los Angeles magazine.
