Nature Leads Design of New Cancer Hospital in Shaoxing
HDR has been selected as the architect to design the new Cancer Hospital of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Zhejiang Cancer Hospital) Shaoxing Campus. The modern, international first-class hospital and research-oriented large-scale medical center will employ elements of nature to help patients heal.
At over five million square feet, the new 2,500-bed cancer hospital will be the largest of its kind in China that will integrate many disciplines and draw world-class medical and research talent to focus on establishing a beacon of health science and technology innovation.
“Our intention was to create a beautiful natural setting with green roofs, balcony gardens and green-facing windows that are different from what most people would expect to see, smell, and hear in a hospital,” said Sangmin Lee, HDR regional director for health in China. “This cancer hospital will be an example of what can happen when nature is used to help healing.”

The design of the new hospital takes inspiration from water and sailing to propose a “Healing Harbor” concept. Through the surrounding landscape, the elegant curve of flowing water will create an experience of returning home to establish an environment with rooted in healing and comfort.
Facing the opportunities of development in science and technology, innovation and national medical demand in Binhai, the cancer hospital will be a provincial-level, tertiary-A, comprehensive hospital based on the concept of “big specialty, comprehensive,” with a focus on oncology. The project will be divided into two phases that will include three centers of excellence, two general inpatient towers, a diagnostics and treatment podium, an infectious disease center, a parking garage, a research and education building, and an administrative building.
