Two HDR-Designed Hospitals Honored in 2020 China Medical Architectural Design Awards

The results of the 2020 China Medical Architectural Design Annual Outstanding Project of the Fifth China Hospital Construction Ingenuity Awards are in and two HDR-designed hospitals made the prestigious list: Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital Grand Canal Branch Affiliated with Zhejiang University School of Medicine and Hebei Zhaohua Hospital.

“It is a great honor to receive this distinguished award organized by the Ministry of Health of China,” said Hank Adams, AIA, FACHA, EDAC, HDR’s global director of health. “Our design teams have not only created visually stunning healthcare campuses, but also human-centered environments that will enable high-quality care.”

The awards program is the only award organized and presented by the Ministry of Health of China. With only 20 projects selected, HDR is the only firm that received recognition for two healthcare projects.

The Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital Grand Canal Branch is situated along the banks of the historical Jing-Hang Grand Canal, a significant cultural symbol in the region and the leading inspiration for the new Sir Shaw Hospital.

“The design embodies the form of the Southeastern Chinese sail boats which have traveled the canal for centuries,” said Sangmin Lee, KIA, LEED AP BD+C, HDR’s director of health in China. “The poetry of the “thousand sails” image enlists the unique natural and cultural elements of the Grand Canal.”

Due to the unique nature of the site, the Hebei Zhaohua Hospital in Shijiazhuang, Hebei, China is divided into two campuses that coalesce into one. As an integrated medical center, each building remains independent while also sharing some functionality creating an ecological medical and healing garden environment.

“The importance of organic forms, organizational clarity, and visual connectivity between two campuses form the design,” said Brian Kowalchuk, FAIA, LEED AP, HDR’s global design director. “The functionality of this concept intertwines people and the built environment in a way that transforms the concept of a traditional medical campus.”

Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital Grand Canal Branch is set to open in 2024 and Hebei Zhaohua Hospital in 2025. All selected winners will be featured in the June issue of Chinese Hospital Architecture & Equipment Magazine.
