South Platte Interceptor

The South Platte Interceptor is an upgraded wastewater interceptor that will serve seven connecting agencies, replacing aging conveyance systems with long-term, visionary infrastructure that will serve the Denver metro area for decades to come.

Denver’s northeastern metro area is experiencing unprecedented growth, and its wastewater facilities were reaching capacity and facing new environmental regulations. In response, the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District embarked on a program to build a 104-million-gallons-per-day, 6.8-mile wastewater interceptor—the metro area’s largest interceptor project in more than 30 years—to connect to its new 24 mgd wastewater treatment facility.

Navigating a diverse urban corridor, with multiple highways, gravel pit lakes and meandering river bends, the 30 to 78-inch diameter interceptor utilized the right combination of material and technique, with a flexible project team, to respond to the needs of the environment and many stakeholders. Following the South Platte River for much of the interceptor’s length, the design team utilized uncommon techniques to avoid negative impacts to the environment, including microtunnels, odor control efforts, and wildlife and native species surveys.

Further, a groundwater management strategy helped analyze 70 years of river morphology and develop mitigation measures that included slurry walls and a unique dewatering system to minimize risks during construction.
