Meeting the Challenges of Rural Communities

Supporting Rural Communities for Over a Century

HDR was founded over 100 years ago to bring electricity to rural communities in the Midwest. Today, we’ve grown into a full-service engineering, architecture, environmental and construction service firm, but our mission is still the same: to make great things possible in the communities in which we live and serve. We will continue to support rural communities and the unique challenges they face.

Rural Challenges

Bringing reliable electricity and broadband services to remote communities can be a challenge.

We helped double electrical capacity in Big Sky, Montana, navigating a new 37-mile 161kV transmission line through rugged United States Forest Service land.

Maintaining more infrastructure with less usage is even more challenging with automated and electric vehicle.

We worked with the Denver region's public and private transportation organizations to help them identify key policies and pilot projects.

Wildfires, snow and ice, and severe storms all pose risk to the reliability of transmission systems.

We helped Chelan County Public Utility District in Washington proactively develop a strategic, cost-effective plan to prepare for future wildfires.
