Since opening in February 2023, the Joan & Paul Rubschlager Building — which completed Rush University’s fully integrated, self-contained campus in Chicago — has received a steady stream of awards for its contribution to the healthcare industry, lean project delivery and excellence in interior design.

Located on an 11-acre site at the nation’s largest urban medical district, the building is filled with state-of-the-art technology and equipment, bringing together clinical care, research, and education to improve collaboration, accelerate discovery and provide patients access to new treatment options.

In October 2023, the Joan & Paul Rubschlager Building received a Healthcare Facilities Symposium & Expo Distinction Award in the user-centered category for successfully balancing the requirements of patients, their families and practitioners in the design. In the same month, the project was named winner of the third annual Lean Construction Institute Design Awards, which honors outstanding designs advancing the industry through collaborative lean project delivery.

“It was gratifying to be part of Rush’s strategy to create a destination center for cancer and neuroscience care and see how our design manifested the vision five years later in this striking new addition to the Chicago skyline,” said Mike Doiel, project delivery director, HDR.

The project has also earned local recognition this year, having been celebrated with awards from both the International Interior Design Association Illinois’ RED Interior Design Awards and American Society of Interior Designers Illinois’ Design Excellence Awards.
