Library Design Honors Local History and Serves as Community Hub

The new Chemainus library is a single-story building whose architectural design was inspired by the industrial heritage of the community. The bright open space has numerous large windows to allow plenty of natural light to filter inside and will serve as a hub for the community. The library is comprised of a children’s area, laptop bar, study space, and a multipurpose room. In addition, the space also contains a fireplace and lounge, encouraging local residents to linger.

Chemainus has a rich history dedicated to the sawmill industry. Feedback from the community helped to steer the design of the new building to be reflective of this history, with details being incorporated such as metal siding and sawn wood elements. Media panels in the lobby provide a visual history of Chemainus, enabling visitors a glimpse into the town’s history.
