For 60 years, college baseball has crowned its national champion at the NCAA Men's College World Series (CWS) in Omaha, Neb. To keep the CWS in Omaha, the city needed to build a new stadium or invest significant dollars renovating the existing one. HDR, in association with Populous, assisted the Mayor's selection committee with pre-design services including studies for the renovation of the existing stadium, the evaluation of eight potential new stadium sites, and programming and conceptual design of the new stadium option.

A downtown site adjacent to the Qwest Arena-Convention Center was chosen as the preferred alternative.

Unique in capacity, purpose and character, TD Ameritrade Park Omaha will enhance the city's reputation as one of America's great sports communities. Designed to fit within the context of the entertainment quarter and as a gateway to downtown, the stadium is intended to serve as a catalyst to future development.  Its design is based on the development of experiences: those of the student-athlete for participation in the competition, those of the fans and patrons visiting multiple games throughout each season, and the development of the community experience—what the stadium with contribute to the CWS event and its relationship to the city of Omaha.

Natural light brightens the enclosed spaces on the 360-degree concourse, giving patrons an enhanced experience of the outdoor venue. Visual connectivity to the city is provided through a series of openings between structures providing vignettes to the city from the concourse. The stadium's stylized contemporary architecture responds with richly-stated brick at the street level with a mixture of clear and translucent glass.

We also performed a traffic study to determine how the road and parking systems would be affected in an area that already experiences event congestion. We prepared traffic simulation models of existing conditions and proposed conditions based on plans for revised roadways and parking. By comparing existing and future conditions, we determined how a typical arena event would be impacted by the new stadium and infrastructure changes.

In addition to hosting the College World Series for the next 25 years, the stadium will serve as home field for the Creighton University baseball team and will host a variety of community events outside of the baseball season including music festivals and UFL football games. The stadium opened in April of 2011.
