Behind the Basics of Designing Mountain Roads

What goes into designing a mountain road? Why are they so complex? The Wall Street Journal wanted to find out and talked to our engineers Tammy Heffron and Howard Hume.

Based in Colorado, Tammy directs the strategic growth of our bridges and structures practice and Howard leads geotechnical work. Their mountain road expertise stems from several major projects including the ongoing work on I-70 through the Rocky Mountains west of Denver.

The two have decades of experience working in the mountains and a deep understanding of the terrain's unique challenges. They shared that expertise with the newspaper, explaining their roles to a lay audience and communicating the passion and knowledge they bring every day.
