Kraton Corporation Cogeneration Plant

Reliable cogeneration that drastically reduces air emissions.

Kraton Corporation’s Ohio facility accounts for a significant percentage of their specialty polymers production worldwide, so safe, compliant and reliable operation of site utility services are critical — even during a local power outage. That’s why Kraton Polymers sought our help as engineer of record for to design a cogeneration plant that would reduce site safety risks, lower emissions, and lessen operations and maintenance costs.

Our work included installation of two new 180,000 lb/hr tri-fueled packaged steam boilers, an 8 megawatt backpressure steam turbine generator, and associated balance of plant equipment and structures for process steam production. We provided procurement support for 21 equipment and systems pre-purchase packages, detailed design including preparation of nine sequenced construction document packages, as well as construction phase technical support.

The new “boiler island” updates the 1960s utilities facility, creating steam for plant process use, offsetting a portion of power purchased from the local utility, and providing a strategic level of backup in the event of a power outage. The environmental benefits are impressive, with air emissions are down more than 96 percent.
