HDR to Provide Engineering for Complex Steeles Avenue Corridor Improvements
HDR has been selected by Halton Region to deliver comprehensive engineering services for the planned Steeles Avenue corridor improvements. The project represents a significant investment by the region, designed to improve public safety and address future travel demand in the fast-growing Town of Milton. The town is among the fastest-growing communities in Ontario and one of the country's top growth centres.
The project includes multiple complexities in its 1.5-kilometer corridor, including two road-under-rail grade separations (involving two separate Class I railroads), a new rail-over-water bridge and two road-over-water bridges. A new greenfield alignment will facilitate a wider four-lane road but will also be immediately adjacent to an environmentally sensitive UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve, requiring careful management to limit adverse impacts during and after construction. The expanded road will also cross a large floodplain that will require careful mitigation.
HDR will take on all of these complexities in its role providing engineering services, starting with preliminary design and continuing through detailed and final design, tender preparation, construction management and post-construction services. The project highlights HDR’s ability to provide multidisciplinary detailed design services across the life cycle of large scale projects in Canada. It will use in-house services such as project management, roadway engineering, structural engineering, environmental services and planning, stormwater management, rail engineering, and construction administration.
The complex grade separations will be a key task, requiring a unique mix of municipal engineering and Class I railroad design experience.
“The Steeles Avenue improvements highlight our staff’s ability to deliver grade separations of all configurations,” said Cristian Huma, the project manager for HDR. “We have experience in design and construction of over 20 complex grade separations throughout Canada, and the Region will benefit from our depth of experience, unmatched resources, and technical expertise.
