Tang and Vondenkamp on Redefining Secure Cyber Education at the U.S. Army Cyber Center of Excellence
In the May-June edition of The Military Engineer (TME) magazine, J.J. Tang, HDR federal facilities director, and Bill Vondenkamp, HDR director of classified facilities (together with Anthony Cady, Chief, Military Programs and Project Management Branch at USACE Savannah District), representing the entire design team, including USACE Savannah and CCoE, discuss the transformation of a former Vietnam-era signal school at Fort Gordon into a secure, mission‑focused, 21st‑century academic campus: the U.S. Army Cyber Center of Excellence (CCoE).
Through a comprehensive master plan and phased delivery, this project integrates human‑centered design, layered security, and adaptable infrastructure to support evolving cyber training needs. Three new specialized instructional and headquarters buildings totaling over 600,000 square feet and major renovations of 215,000 square feet of two existing academic buildings were delivered while maintaining continuous operations.
The design seamlessly embeds security into the architecture, supports flexible learning modalities, and establishes a cohesive visual identity inspired by binary code, setting a new benchmark for secure cyber-education facilities.
