Andy Abernathy Promoted to North Carolina Business Development Leader
Experienced transportation infrastructure leader Andy Abernathy, P.E., has been promoted to HDR’s North Carolina transportation business development leader.
Abernathy will set the strategic vision for the firm’s transportation practice in North Carolina, leading business development efforts for planning, design and construction programs. His focus will include major pursuits, long‑term strategic planning and strengthening client relationships across the state.
Abernathy brings more than 21 years of industry and HDR experience to this role. He began his career in bridge design, building deep expertise in interstate highway and bridge design before expanding into leadership positions that span bridges and structures, project management and statewide market strategy. He has worked across all transportation markets, including recent targeted efforts in transit and aviation.
Throughout his career, Abernathy has earned a reputation for building trusted client relationships, connecting teams across disciplines and delivering high‑quality outcomes. He has deep roots in North Carolina, having built his career there after earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from North Carolina State University.
“I’ve been fortunate to work on a number of impactful projects,” Abernathy said. “Through our success in the North Carolina design-build market, I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to significant portions of the I-85 and I-40 corridors connecting Charlotte to Raleigh. What makes that especially cool is having my kids point out ‘my’ bridges when we’re on the road.”
“Andy has a deep understanding of North Carolina’s transportation market and an exceptional ability to bring people together around a shared strategy,” said HDR Southeast Region Transportation Director David Kinard. “He leads with credibility, empathy and a strong focus on quality, which makes him the right person to help drive our next phase of growth in the state.”
