Coast Mountain College Smithers Campus

Connecting Environment, Campus, and Community

This major addition and renovation offers Coast Mountain College a significant increase in the capacity and functionality of the Smithers campus. The combined renovation to the existing building and new addition has nearly tripled the capacity of the college. Visitors will find the campus has been consolidated into a single, wheel-chair accessible building that not only enhances the learning environment, but also uses the latest in green building technology. This major renovation and addition was accomplished with complex phasing and planning to ensure that the campus remained open and functional for as long as possible.

Key features include:

  • A vaulted galleria that connects the new and existing structures, brings natural light into the interior of the building and aids natural ventilation throughout.
  • Additional classroom space, wet and dry science labs, a multi-purpose shop for trades programs, expanded library and a computer lab for the colleges
  • Improved video conferencing and distance education capabilities.
  • Wood, rock and First Nations art throughout the campus — symbolizing forestry, mining and First Nations culture and representing Coast Mountain College’s connection and commitment to the communities of the Northwest, giving students and instructors a sense of belonging within the college.
  • Sustainable energy solutions such as reflective roof surfaces which minimize solar heat gain, solar energy collection through photovoltaic panels, and Geo-thermal energy to generate heat.
