WMATA Dulles Rail Yard and Maintenance Facility

As the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority expanded the Metrorail system in Northern Virginia, they saw the need for a new rail yard and maintenance facility to handle railcar service and maintenance.

The resulting facility is located on 95 acres of Washington Dulles International Airport property and is designed to house an ultimate capacity of 228 railcars, the largest rail yard in the WMATA system. Our vehicle maintenance facility design experts provided equipment industrial design and construction support services for the $300 million design-build project, scheduled for completion in 2020.

Supporting the Silver Line extension, the facility is a key part of the expansion that will bring rail service to Washington Dulles International Airport. It includes five major buildings, three of which are targeting LEED certification. These include the Service and Inspection Building, Maintenance of Way Building, Train Wash, Vehicle Storage Facility, and Transportation and Police Building.

The largest building, the Service and Inspection Building, supports all needed regular maintenance of railcars with a myriad of specialized equipment that includes in-ground lifts, truck repair shop, paint booth, air compressor plant, lube system, wheel truing equipment and specialized bays for car cleaning.
