HDR’s Whitney Birch and Pete Lampi Share Insights on Digital Innovation and Flexible Contract Approaches

When it comes to delivering a massive technical program such as the Ontario Line in Toronto, having a holistic overview of how all the interrelated contracts and pieces fit together is critical for staying on track. As the technical advisor for the 15.6-kilometer subway through downtown Toronto, our team has helped owner Metrolinx plan and deliver the extremely complex effort since the project began in 2019.

Rail and transit experts Whitney Birch and Pete Lampi have helped lead the technical advisory team for the Ontario Line, including work to assess and develop procurement strategies, construction phasing, design coordination, data sharing, project controls and more. The two described some of their work and the program’s goals in a recent article about project management for International Railway Journal.

“Delivering the largest metro expansion in the history of Toronto has required a team committed to multidisciplinary solutions and achieving the goals set by public transport authority Metrolinx,” the authors wrote. “Understanding the project’s needs and putting them first is key and is about much more than completing specific assignments.”
