How Program Management Improves the Delivery of Complex Transportation Infrastructure

Erin Slayton Explains Program Management Benefits on Podcast 

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, program management is not a scaled-up version of project management. HDR’s Erin Slayton, P.E., recently joined the AEC Project Management Podcast to debunk that common misconception and explain how program management adds value to large transportation initiatives.

Slayton serves as HDR’s transportation program management services director and has worked on complex, multibillion-dollar programs. On the podcast, Slayton explained how program managers offer a high-level strategic approach.

“With program management, we often at the start of a program don’t even know what the final product is going to be so you can’t really focus on what the infrastructure is, you have to focus on what is the outcome,” Slayton said. “Are you creating corridor mobility? Are you injecting some economic stimulus into the region? Are you really just helping improve people’s lives by helping them move from place to place a little bit better and a little bit easier?"

When implemented early, a programmatic approach empowers owners to choose strategic direction and make informed decisions that may reduce cost and schedule risks.

Slayton said program management can help owners deliver on the promises they’ve made to stakeholders.
