Illinois Veterans Home at Quincy – The Long-Term Care Building
A Home That Honors Service
Sitting on a 220-acre campus near the banks of the Mississippi River, the Illinois Veterans Home Long-Term Care Building supports the state’s mission to provide modern, dignified care for veterans. Designed as part of a larger expansion of a campus that dates back to 1886, the facility replaces outdated environments with a contemporary yet timeless setting that promotes wellness, safety and community connection while honoring its rich history and context. In collaboration with Perkins Eastman, we transformed the facility into a forward-looking, resident-centered care environment.
Supporting Dignity and Care
We implemented a neighborhood-to-household model that balances efficient care delivery with a residential scale. Organized across four levels, the building creates a clear hierarchy between public gathering areas and intimate resident zones. Centralized amenities encourage community engagement, while smaller household groupings provide privacy, familiarity and ease of navigation.
Each design decision reinforces both clinical performance and comfort. Natural light, intuitive circulation and strategic sightlines support staff efficiency while creating a welcoming resident experience. The interior spaces feature nature-based colors, textures and materials to create a hospitality-inspired environment. Specialized planning considerations help residents experiencing memory loss navigate the environment more comfortably, reducing confusion and supporting independence.
The building extends care beyond its walls through a series of therapeutic outdoor environments designed for varying levels of care. Secure courtyards provide safe access to nature for assisted living and memory care residents, while terraces, gardens and social spaces create opportunities for recreation, reflection and connection. Radial building form and glazing enhance daylight and strengthen connections to the campus landscape. Together, these environments support residents' physical, emotional and social well-being.
Continuing a Proud Legacy
The completed facility establishes a new standard for long-term veteran care in Illinois. By combining clinical excellence, specialized memory care environments and meaningful connections to nature, the design supports independence, reduces stress and promotes overall well-being. As a cornerstone of the Illinois Veterans Home campus transformation, the facility strengthens a continuum of care that allows veterans to remain part of a cohesive community while receiving the support they need throughout every stage of life.
