Pavement Rectification Program Review (Phases 1 and 2)

For Phase 1 of the Pavement Rectification Program Review project HDR was commissioned by Transurban to develop a pavement management strategy for the Gateway Motorway Extension and Logan Motorway, which is part of Transurban’s motorway network in Brisbane. Through our innovative approach to pavement design, HDR was tasked with planning and coordinating an extensive pavement testing program to provide detailed knowledge of the existing asset, assessing the condition of the existing pavement, identifying options (which considered pavement treatments, constructability, traffic impacts, costs, and whole-of-life considerations), and through extensive stakeholder interactions within Transurban, assessed options and developed a preferred pavement strategy and a 20 to 30-year asset management plan for the network. HDR and Transurban technical staff wrote a joint paper on the outcomes, which was presented at the Asset Management Council’s annual conference AMPEAK, and published in The Asset Journal.

Phase 2 of the project saw HDR provide technical support to Transurban during the construction phase of identified remediation works for the Logan Motorway between Formation Street and Mount Lindesay Highway, including select ramps. HDR was responsible for the inspection of the insitu cemented material to verify the integrity of the substrate and recommend remediation of the cemented material. This involved determining potential problematic areas and developing risk based scenarios together with Transurban inspectors and engineers to mitigate potential construction risks. HDR also provided support to the Transurban Project Engineer with contractor requests for information and clarification, non-conformances, updating and alternative designs based on actual conditions.
