American Crystal Sugar Beet Processing Plants

Staying on top of regulatory compliance is critical when you're the largest beet sugar producer in the U.S.

So for the past 20 years we’ve worked together with American Crystal Sugar Company to make compliance an everyday part of operations. After an initial operations assessment and review of National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants and National Ambient Air Quality Standards, we provided compliance recommendations and a strategy for long-term sustainability and operational flexibility at four of their manufacturing facilities.

With the strategy in place, we conducted an engineering study using a cost-benefit approach. The result was four facility-specific Boiler Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) compliance conceptual design solutions and a long-range schedule with phased implementation to allow time for budgetary approvals.

Now working alongside ACS in the role of owner’s engineer, we’re putting Boiler MACT compliance solutions into action and retrofitting existing coal fired-boilers, air quality control systems and sulfur dioxide handling systems at all four facilities. Guidance for risk management and process safety compliance round out our services.

By putting our compliance plans into action, ACS hasn’t lost a single day of operation.
