American Crystal Sugar Beet Processing Plants

Regulatory Compliance for One of the Largest U.S. Beet Sugar Producers

We worked with American Crystal Sugar Company (ACS) to make compliance an everyday part of operations. After an initial operations assessment and review of National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants and National Ambient Air Quality Standards, we provided compliance recommendations and a strategy for long-term sustainability and operational flexibility at four ACS manufacturing facilities.

An engineering study was conducted using a cost-benefit approach. The result was four facility-specific Boiler Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) compliance conceptual design solutions and a long-range schedule with phased implementation to allow time for budgetary approvals.

As owner’s engineer, we put Boiler MACT compliance solutions into action and retrofitted existing coal fired-boilers, air quality control systems and sulfur dioxide handling systems at all four facilities. Guidance for risk management and process safety compliance rounded out our services.
