Bus Rapid and Conventional Transit Planning, Design and Engineering

Saskatoon’s transit system is evolving to meet the needs of current and future residents. As identified in the Growth Plan, a major component of Saskatoon’s future transit system is bus rapid transit, which will:

  • Connect multiple communities, businesses, and provide direct connections to major destinations such as post-secondary institutions, hospitals, downtown and shopping centres
  • Form the structural backbone of Saskatoon’s transit network
  • Be a major organizing element of the Growth Plan — the BRT will support the intensification of land uses along major corridors and Transit Village developments.

HDR provided a comprehensive range of services, which included the development of functional plans and detailed design of three BRT routes, including route, runningway, and stations. The study included a thorough traffic analysis for intersections and road sections, including the development of Synchro and VISSIM models to assess transit signal priority measures, queue jumps and runningways to improve transit operations as well as to assess impacts on general traffic.

HDR also completed a park and ride strategy, an intelligent transportation and emerging mobility assessment, a benefit-cost analysis and redesigned the Saskatoon Transit Bus Route Network.
