Major Mackenzie Drive Culvert Replacement

Major Mackenzie Drive is one of the busiest streets in York Region, expected to carry over 50,000 vehicles per day by 2031. To deal with several operational issues, the Region is taking multiple steps to improve the street. York Region partnered with HDR on one such improvement: the West Don River culvert crossing of Major Mackenzie in the historic Village of Maple, City of Vaughan.

Upon completion of an environmental assessment, HDR confirmed that the existing arch culvert required an immediate replacement due to structural degradation and upward buckling. HDR designed a temporary bracing system to stabilize the structure, making it safe for travel, while the detailed design for the permanent structure was produced. The detailed design not only developed plans for a new, more durable concrete culvert, it also included a new pedestrian/cycling underpass, new paved connections, multi-use paths, a new storm sewer system and an installation of a water main.

HDR provided engineering and construction inspection services during the emergency repairs for the culvert replacement at the West Don River. The emergency repairs were completed ahead of schedule.

This project was awarded the 2019 Project of the Year from the Ontario Public Works Association under the category Disaster/Emergency Construction/Repair. This award recognizes effective construction management and scheduling, safety practices, environmental protection and dealing with adverse conditions.
