New Redevelopment Sports Complex Scores Early and Under Budget

The redevelopment of the award-winning Poirier Sport Complex required fitting in new arenas, a curling rink, and sports hall of fame within a tight site, where existing buildings needed to remain in operation during construction. The existing main arena was also expanded to 1,800 seats, with associated seismic upgrades. Despite these complex challenges, the project was completed several million dollars under budget and more than a year ahead of schedule.

The design charrette process required consensus from more than 17 user groups. Because the project was faced with a significant cost overrun on the preceding pool project, a significant milestone was our presentation to Coquitlam City Council, which not only allowed the project to avoid cancellation, but also to ensure its budget increase dramatically in order to meet stakeholder needs.

The new complex includes a recreational NHL-sized hockey rink, along with:

• Six-sheet curling rink with three practice sheets
• Dressing rooms
• A new complex entrance and lobby
• Food and beverage amenities
• Multi-use rooms
• User group office space and other support spaces

Sustainably-designed, it incorporates heat island reduction strategies, light pollution reduction, low-emitting materials and recycled-content materials.
