Integrated Health and Housing Design by HDR Recognized as Finalist in 2026 European Healthcare Design Awards
HDR’s design for the Hillsborough Acute Mental Health and Life Skills Centre and Transitional Housing on Canada’s Prince Edward Island has been recognized as a finalist of the 2026 European Healthcare Design (EHD) Awards in the “Future Healthcare Design (unbuilt projects)” category.
Organized by SALUS Global Knowledge Exchange and Architects for Health, the global conference, exhibition and award program recognizes design excellence in the healthcare environment and aims to promote health and wellness, embed quality improvement and support the delivery of treatment and care in an accessible, sustainable and equitable way.
Commissioned by Department of Health and Wellness, Government of Prince Edward Island and designed by HDR in association with Sable ARC, the Hillsborough Acute Mental Health and Life Skills Centre and Transitional Housing is a new kind of care environment designed to expand access to health services and reshape how care is delivered and experienced. Located along the Hillsborough River and inspired by its local landscape and natural context, the integrated campus is designed to support inpatient care, addiction recovery and community-based programs.
As one of four shortlisted projects in the “Future Healthcare Design (unbuilt projects)” award category, the distinction as a shortlisted finalist recognizes the design as visionary, innovative and responsive to emerging health, social and environmental challenges.
An award ceremony in the final session of the 12th European Healthcare Design 2026 Congress will be held at the QEII Centre in Westminster, London, United Kingdom, June 16, 2026.
