HDR Partners With Noddle, OPPD to Procure 100% Renewable Energy in Headquarters
HDR headquarters now procures 100% renewable electricity through its power utility, Omaha Public Power District (OPPD). HDR is accomplishing this virtually through agreements with the building owner, Noddle Companies, and a program administered by the utility.
This change will help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions attributed to the firm’s largest office, which contains more than 1,100 employees. It will also support renewable energy in Nebraska.
Through Noddle and OPPD, HDR purchases renewable energy certificates (RECs) from the local public electric utility’s renewable choice program. This program allows businesses to support renewable energy and offset carbon emissions without installing solar panels or other energy technologies on-site.
Each REC represents the “renewable” attributes of one megawatt-hour (1,000 kilowatt-hours) of renewable energy. Funds from REC purchases will support projects dedicated to further decarbonizing OPPD’s grid mix.
HDR’s 10-story headquarters building has 245,000 square feet of office space and features collaboration areas and other modern amenities. Since opening, it has achieved the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), Version 4, Gold-level rating and Fitwel Certification 2-Star rating. The headquarters building opened in 2018, designed by HDR employees for Noddle Companies.
“Participating in OPPD’s renewable electricity program is part of doing things right to make great things possible – engaging with our local communities and clients and meaningfully reducing greenhouse gas emissions while managing costs and risks,” said Lisa Fewins, HDR’s corporate sustainability director.
