What We Support

Grant Spotlight: Friends of Des Moines Parks

With the support of an HDR Foundation grant to Friends of Des Moines Parks, the City of Des Moines Parks and Recreation has introduced adaptive soccer, flag football, basketball and baseball for youth of all ability levels.

The grant funded adaptive sports equipment to launch the program, giving youth new recreational opportunities that build confidence and bring the joy of playing sports with other kids.

“It really does change the community and makes a lasting impact,” said Andy McCoy, computational fluid dynamics lead, who sponsored the grant for new adaptive sports equipment. “It makes me proud of the company I work for.”

All Kids Bike Grants

The HDR Foundation is in its third year partnering with the Strider Education Foundation to bring the popular All Kids Bike program to public schools across the U.S.

The HDR Foundation awarded a $327,000 Impact Grant — a board-led HDR Foundation initiative — to fund the successful learn-to-ride program to 37 schools' kindergarten PE classes during the 2024-2025 school year. Since the 2022-2023 school year, the HDR Foundation has awarded $834,000 to All Kids Bike across three school years, rolling the program out at more than 100 schools.

Each school receives the equipment and training needed to implement the program, including 24 Strider 14x balance bikes, 24 pedal conversion kits, 24 fully adjustable helmets, a 20-inch instructor bike and a five-year support plan at no cost.
