A New Landmark Bridge Rises in Miami
Bridge Design & Engineering Magazine Visits the Site of the New I-395 Signature Bridge
The I-395 signature bridge in Miami is redrawing the city’s skyline, creating a new city icon. The bridge, featuring six unique arches, was recently profiled by Bridge Design & Engineering, which shared details from a visit to the site this year.
The magazine wrote about the design challenges, such as its asymmetric arches, first-of-its-kind foundations in Florida and phased construction schedule. As the article shared, the bridge “is fast becoming a statement of the city’s civic identity as well as its technical ambition.”
The magazine interviewed key members of HDR’s design team, including project engineer of record Mike Lamont, Design Manager John Hansen, Transportation Alternative Delivery Director Jay Chiglo, and Field Design Representative Alvaro Aranguren. They spoke to how our team is addressing these challenges and specific solutions that are being implemented, including rebar choice, concrete mix selection and designing for each stage of construction.
“The design accounted for redundancy, long-term inspection and maintainability throughout the bridge’s life,” said Aranguren.
When complete, the bridge will be part of a much-needed larger roadway project that HDR is also leading, all designed to improve capacity in the area. It will also create a new highlight for the city of Miami, with its six arches creating a memorable landmark for visitors and residents alike.
