Enrique Greenwell, Intl. Assoc. AIA, LEED AP has joined HDR’s architecture practice in Dallas as design principal. In this new role, he is charged with championing design excellence for both the local office and region, and to develop innovative, creative, integrated design solutions that are effective for the firm’s diverse clientele. He will also mentor and develop junior staff.

With nearly 30 years of global design experience in the Middle East, Latin America, China and the United States, Greenwell’s portfolio includes a wide range of award-winning projects and building types including transportation, commercial, hospitality, and healthcare facilities. He offers a broad perspective on issues crucial to the project from pre-design services through design development and to construction documents.

“Enrique is a great fit for our studio because he welcomes opportunities for collaboration,” said Chad Anderson, managing principal. “We value his belief that success is team-based; that while he offers immense professional experience and a valuable personal approach to solving a problem, he is an ardent champion for the idea that success is always a reflection of those you surround yourself.”

In fact, it is the design process that Greenwell is most passionate about.

“A finished building is always exciting, but it is the process that takes a designer from the initial pen stroke to getting to know a client and understanding their needs that is most fascinating,” Greenwell said. “Every aspect of design, from dreaming the idea to getting the proper technical drawings in place and witnessing your client’s reaction when they see their dream fulfilled is what drives me every day. Perhaps we all have a long list of buildings we have worked on, but for the client it may be the only one they do, so they deserve our total attention.”

Some of Greenwell’s notable projects include: the American British Cowdray ABC Hospital in Mexico City, which was awarded the International Academy Awards’ 2009 Best International Health Project; the American British Cowdray “Torre de Hospitalizacion NEHO,” recognized with a 2013 AIA Honor Award; the American British Cowdray ABC Cancer Center in Mexico City, honored with a 2010 Healthcare Design Magazine International Citation of Merit; and the King Hussein Cancer Center in Amman, Jordan, which was awarded the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences as Best Arab Medical Center in 2019.

Greenwell has lectured at many foreign universities and via online architectural platforms, served as a design critic for the College of Architecture, Planning, and Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Arlington, and recently spoke on “Local Interpretations of Contemporary Architecture” for the 62nd Anniversary of the Colegio de Arquitectos Guanajuato in Mexico. He is also a member of LiA Latinos in Architecture in Dallas.
