HDR’s Jeffrey Han was recently named the American Society of Civil Engineers Metropolitan Section’s Civil Engineer of the Year

The recognition is the section organization’s highest award, honoring a civil engineer who has rendered exceptional service to the civil engineering profession, to the Met Section and to the Society.

Han’s contributions to civil engineering include his leadership of signature bridge projects, guiding teams to develop innovative solutions, managing multi-national design teams and executing comprehensive quality plans. He has led the design of successful landmark projects including the New York State Thruway Authority’s Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, which won more than a dozen major industry awards. He oversaw the design of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s Bayonne Bridge Navigational Clearance project, which was recognized with the ACEC Grand Conceptor Award in 2018. Beyond bridges, Han provided valuable expertise to projects for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, New York City Department of Transportation and New York State Department of Transportation.

Han has employed his expertise on some of the largest infrastructure projects in the United States. He has served in leadership roles for Virginia Department of Transportation’s Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion, Virginia’s largest infrastructure project, as well as the Los Angeles World Airport’s automated people mover.

A dedicated ASCE member, Han has been a long-time supporter of the Met Section initiatives, such as the Future City Competition and the Structures Group Seminar Series. Under his mentorship, five of his engineers have been recognized by ENR as top professionals in New York for their engineering contributions. Members of his teams have gone on to different and significant assignments to make their own marks in the NYC metro area and elsewhere.

“Jeff has set the standard for excellence in bridge design, project delivery and client service throughout the East Coast and beyond,” said HDR Transportation President Tom McLaughlin. “His leadership and technical expertise led to projects that leave an indelible mark on the New York metropolitan area and set the stage for future bridge design and overall infrastructure innovation.
