Amy Mays, IIDA, LEED AP, EDAC, has been promoted to health director, interiors for HDR’s global design practice — a new position for the firm emphasizing the critical importance and influence interior environments have on health, healing and well-being.

Mays brings more than 25 years of experience to her new role, with over 12 years in HDR’s New York architecture studio in Manhattan. Through her leadership, Mays has played an essential part in the growth and evolution of the New York studio and HDR’s interiors practice across North America. Her most recent work at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center University Hospital will open in 2026.

“Amy has distinguished herself as both an expert in healthcare environments and a creative professional who clients seek out and continue to work with on projects across their portfolios,” said HDR Global Director of Interiors Lois Wellwood. “She has had significant, lasting, and positive impacts on projects, project teams, individuals and clients alike.”

As health director, interiors, Mays will continue to work from HDR’s New York architecture studio to strengthen client relationships, mentor talent, lead project teams and elevate the culture of design across health and interiors disciplines. In collaboration with health practice leadership, Mays will partner across the West, Central and East regions to advance strategic business goals, foster growth, and elevate interior design.

“I’m honored to step into this new role, which reflects the firm’s commitment to advancing health as a strategic priority, and excited to help shape what comes next,” Mays said. “With important work ahead, I’m looking forward to helping teams strategize, align and bring bold ideas to life to deliver lasting value.”

A recipient of the International Interior Design Association New York’s 2025 Leadership Award of Excellence and past president of the chapter, Mays is recognized as an industry leader for “demonstrating unwavering commitment to advancing the interior design profession, fostering collaboration and mentoring future generations of designers.” Her industry expertise has been featured in Building Design + Construction’s “Top 10 Trends in the Hospital Facilities Market,” and bylined articles on healthcare interiors for Medical Construction & Design Magazine.
