Nico Malfara, P.Eng., leader of HDR’s transit practice in Canada, is one of the recipients of the Canadian Consulting Engineer’s Top 10 Under 40 Awards program. The magazine recognizes promising young professional engineers working as consultants in the infrastructure field.

During his more than 10 years at HDR, Malfara has specialized in rapid transit planning, including work on complex multidisciplinary projects such as the Ontario Line subway project in Toronto, the Hazel McCallion Light Rail Transit North Extension and the award-winning Lakeshore Connecting Communities Bus Rapid Transit project. In his current role, Malfara oversees a team of 90 professionals helping transit agencies successfully deliver critical transit infrastructure across Canada. His impact spans technical innovation, mentorship, community engagement and strategic business development.

“Nico has established himself as a trusted leader with a deep understanding of how to collaborate with transit agencies, clients and colleagues to deliver successful infrastructure,” said HDR Global Transit Director Matt Tucker. “His commitment and passion for improving public transportation across Canada and HDR’s global program is contagious, and he is very deserving of this recognition.”

Outside of work, Malfara volunteers with multiple industry and community organizations. He is a big supporter of WTS International, whose aim is to advance women in transportation. He recently facilitated a panel discussion bringing together four women leaders in bus rapid transit (BRT) implementation from across Canada to highlight their leadership in these programs.

“I am honored to be recognized with this award,” Malfara said. “As a lifelong user of public transportation, I am passionate about making transit systems work better for everyone as we help our clients shape the future of transit in Canada.”
