In his more than 40-year career as an architect, Hans has excelled in a wide variety of key design and technical roles across a diverse portfolio of complex projects and building types. His extensive expertise, design and technical acumen, integrated multi-disciplinary approach and passion for sustainability are acutely relevant to the need for convergence, collaboration and repositioning of building assets for contemporary education and science clients.
At HDR, Hans is instrumental in developing and nurturing client relationships to position the firm for new opportunities. He leads multidisciplinary project teams, focusing primarily on the Illinois/Indiana area while also extending his efforts geographically as new client relationships emerge. Hans's work is concentrated in higher education, K-12, science and technology, and community typologies. He is dedicated to strengthening the education and science practice in Chicago, enhancing collaboration with other markets across the firm, and mentoring young professionals.
Over his career, Hans has led notable projects for clients, including AbbVie, Argonne National Laboratory, Northwestern University and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. His work has been recognized for its impact and excellence, showcasing his ability to manage complex projects successfully. Hans is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories, and the U.S. Green Building Council.
Beyond his project work, Hans is a thought leader and contributor to the industry. He has presented on topics including adaptive reuse and building envelope at prominent conferences and published articles addressing the impact of COVID-19 on higher education and institutional research. His dedication to providing high-caliber architectural design in service to research, learning and community building underscores his commitment to fostering equitable and empowered communities.
