Darryl Shoemaker Named HDR Chief Talent Development Officer
HDR has named Darryl Shoemaker, Ph.D., as the company’s chief talent development officer.
Shoemaker will work closely with all of the firm’s corporate groups and the over 50 ways they invest back into the employee-owners of HDR to help them map a rewarding and fulfilling career journey. Reporting to the chief executive officer, he will stand up a resilient talent development framework that supports HDR in living out its purpose — “Making Great Things Possible” — and the calling to think about what employees owe the future.
Shoemaker has served as president of what was the company’s industrial, power and waste practice for the past 10 years. In that role, he guided HDR’s strategic direction and performance within the energy and industrial markets. He reinforced a problem-solving culture in an employee-owned firm, allowing for longer-term planning and a focus on solving HDR's clients' most complex issues. Since joining HDR in 1995, Shoemaker has led teams with a passion for staff development and has been involved in sponsoring the company’s young professionals’ employee network group and development of its matrix collaboration culture.
His early experiences as a technical and business leader resulted in an appreciation of quality work. "I am very thankful for this opportunity to give back to our employee-owners," Shoemaker said. "As an industry, we need to step up our game for a new season. A talent framework will help us all make the most of what we have been given."

Currently residing in Vancouver, Shoemaker began his career at a large family-owned construction supply firm in Alberta, Canada. He is a graduate of the University of Waterloo, where he earned his doctorate with a focus on natural resources management.
