HDR-Developed Bridge Asset Management Platform in Spotlight
Colorado’s System for Inspection and Management of Structural Assets Highlighted in Aspire Magazine
Researching the thousands of structural assets in Colorado formerly required tracking down disconnected and disparate records spread across regional offices in various formats, from printed plans to CD-ROMs.
Wanting a better way of organizing data on its assets, Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) partnered with HDR to develop the System for Inspection and Management of Structural Assets, or SIMSA. This asset-management system includes management of asset data such as photos and documents, tracks historical bridge condition changes and recommended maintenance activities, and importantly, it can be accessed and updated either from an office or in the field.
The tool was recently featured in Aspire magazine, a publication of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute. Built from the ground up, the web-based tool includes significant improvements from CDOT’s previous asset management system, including automated photo management, auto-calculation of inspection quantities, integrated GIS mapping, the ability to take photos with the inspection app, cloud hosting and more.
“The platform delivers a single, unified database of CDOT’s structural assets,” the article explains, “which promises to facilitate structural safety and efficient maintenance of Colorado’s infrastructure for years to come.”
