Kevin Ashton Discusses Terminal Design Trends in ENR Modern Airports

In a special aviation industry roundtable published by Engineering News-Record (ENR), Kevin Ashton, HDR aviation architecture principal, joined industry leaders in discussing how airport terminals are evolving beyond mere transportation hubs to become community gateways that reflect local identity, accessibility and sustainability priorities.

Based in New York, Ashton has more than 25 years of aviation planning and design experience, giving him a front-row perspective on how airport facilities are responding to changing passenger and community expectations. In the piece, Ashton points to projects such as the new terminal at North Platte Regional Airport, where mass timber, expansive glazing and prairie-inspired materials create a stronger connection to western Nebraska. He also highlighted design approaches used in the Pittsburgh International Airport terminal modernization program that celebrate regional character and community identity.
