Pittsburgh Airport Modernization Opens to Passengers

HDR a Key Part of Design Team Behind Transformed Traveler Experience

Pittsburgh International Airport has opened its new terminal, marking the completion of the $1.7 billion terminal modernization program.

The milestone reached Nov. 18 is the culmination of years of design and construction. It completes the airport’s transformation from a hub to an origin and destination airport that better accommodates the millions of travelers flying into or out of the facility each year. HDR was closely involved at each step, most notably leading infrastructure design, landside access planning and design, and airside modifications. A new 27 lane-mile roadway network that includes a three-level bridge among the longest in Pittsburgh was also an integral piece of the project. As part of the design team, HDR worked closely with Gensler and luis vidal + architects to create a seamless connection between all parts of the redesigned terminal.

“In aviation, there is a saying that if you’ve seen one airport, you’ve seen one airport,” HDR Aviation Director Bill Peduzzi said. “The new Pittsburgh International Airport will convey a sense of place, welcoming home Pittsburgh natives like me and new visitors in a way that could only happen here. It was driven by the world-class vision of the Allegheny County Airport Authority, developed by a world-class team of designers and construction managers and built by the people of this region.”

The redesigned terminal is designed to radically improve the passenger experience, and the new terminal front bridge is emblematic of that approach. HDR’s bridge engineers and architects designed the 1,300-foot structure to minimize walking distances and level changes, manage noise, provide intuitive wayfinding and reduce visual clutter. The result is a better trip for travelers that starts before they even enter the terminal.

“Pittsburgh International Airport’s transformation shows both the many components that make up a successful airport and the versatility of HDR,” said HDR Transportation President Tom McLaughlin. “Our professionals provided everything from utility relocation, geotechnical and traffic studies to extensive structural and civil work, even a design charrette with our health design experts. The result is a modernized, welcoming airport that is unique to Pittsburgh. Congratulations to the whole team and the airport.”
