HDR to Receive 3 Top Engineering Awards at ACEC Ceremony
The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) is recognizing 26 HDR projects this year, showcasing innovative work delivered across diverse markets and regions throughout the United States.
On May 5, three projects will receive Honor Awards at ACEC’s annual Engineering Excellence Awards Gala in Washington, D.C. Selected by a panel of nearly 30 judges from more than 240 entries, these projects represent the highest-caliber achievements in the profession — often likened to the Academy Awards of engineering. An Honor Award places a project among the competition's top tier, exceeded only by the Grand Award and the ultimate Grand Conceptor Award.
HDR's Three Honor Awards
New York City Central Business District Tolling Program implements North America’s first congestion pricing program, solving a decades-old traffic burden, disincentivizing private vehicle use, and encouraging mass transit. With approximately 110 detection points integrated into existing infrastructure, the project uses innovative methods, data processing and machine learning to reduce average daily traffic by 11% while generating more than $550 million in net revenue within the first year.
San Pedro Creek Culture Park transforms a 2.2-mile former concrete channel into a gleaming linear park, seamlessly integrating flood control, water quality improvements, ecological restoration, and cultural celebration. The team overcame near-impossible challenges – constructing in a flood channel, with archaeological evidence of habitation dating back millennia, alongside historic structures, with existing infrastructure, and discovering the foundation for one of San Antonio’s historic African American churches. The $275 million project provides superior flood protection, catalyzes economic revitalization, and strengthens community connections.
SR 520 Montlake Lid and Bridges replaces the seismically vulnerable West Approach Bridge South and reconnects the Montlake community with a landscaped lid and multimodal land bridge over the highway. The team overcame a COVID shutdown, kept traffic moving, and appeased neighbors to deliver the historic project. It allows the structure to remain in service immediately following a 1,000-year earthquake. Following nearly a decade of public input, the $487 million project integrates public transit, prioritizes sustainability, reconnects historic green spaces, and showcases a new approach to transportation.
