Fast-Track Design Helps Restore USACE Flood Control Systems

When U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District needed to repair flood control projects on the Salt Creek and Papillion Creek Levee Systems in the wake of the spring 2019 floods, they looked to HDR to provide a fast-track design approach.

Our engineers worked hand-in-hand with the Corps of Engineers and local sponsors, the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District and the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District. HDR moved quickly to provide rehabilitation design to protect billions of dollars of infrastructure and several hundred thousand people.

With an extremely aggressive schedule, HDR completed the repair design for more than 40 damaged locations. We delivered a 30% design package within three weeks of receiving post-flood survey data, 60% design within seven weeks, and ready to advertise construction documents within 120 days of notice-to-proceed.

A $4.7 million construction contract was recently awarded to repair the Salt Creek Flood Control System in Lincoln, Nebraska. With an estimated $1.1 billion in property that receives flood risk management benefits from this flood control system, the repair is vitally important to the City of Lincoln, the State of Nebraska, USACE, and all stakeholders. Award to construct the Papillion Creek Flood Control System repair is currently pending. HDR will provide construction support services for both systems.
