National Go Fishing Day
Celebrate National Go Fishing Day
Each year on June 18, National Go Fishing Day offers a wonderful reason to enjoy the great outdoors. It's also a chance to highlight the significance of fish and aquatic resources, which play a crucial role in our communities by offering ecological, economic and social benefits.
Dear Angler,
There’s something timeless about fishing. Long before smartphones, deadlines, or packed schedules, people found their way to the water with a simple goal: cast a line and see what happens. It’s simple, really.
Fishing isn’t just about what you catch though. It’s about the moments that come with it. Early mornings on a quiet lake or stream. Teaching someone their first cast. Time spent with family, friends, or even just yourself. It’s one of the few things left that allows us to slow down, connect with nature, and reset.
For many of us, fishing also represents something bigger. Healthy waters, thriving fish populations, and the continued effort to sustain and improve the aquatic resources we depend on. Whether you realize it or not, every time you enter the water, you are part of that story. At HDR, we see another side of fishing. The health of our waters. The systems that support fish populations. The work happening every day to sustain and improve the aquatic resources that make these experiences possible. Fishing may be simple, but what supports it is not. It’s this reason that makes National Go Fishing Day so important at HDR.
On June 18, National Go Fishing Day gives us a chance to celebrate everything fishing represents. Whether you’re a lifelong angler or just beginning, take the opportunity to grab a rod, head outside, and spend time on the water or your favorite bank. Bring someone along or enjoy the solitude. Either way, put your phone down and be present.
The fishing is always good.— Matt Cochran, Fisheries Director
