Sustainable Design Lead

As a sustainable design leader, Peter is committed to further strengthening our leadership role in decarbonization and regenerative design. Based in Toronto, he augments the firm’s ongoing sustainable design initiatives by supporting individual project teams across Canada to "design in" sustainable performance and achieve design excellence from project inception to hand-over. He is also a trusted sustainability advisor to our clients.

“I work with design teams to ignite creative design solutions by leveraging the HDR network and employing evidence-based approaches to optimize designs for decarbonization and regeneration. This is a challenging but exciting time as we are asked to test new technologies, approaches, and materials alongside rediscovering time-proven methods to build more sustainably. How often are you asked to truly save the planet? Now is the time for us to deliver the excellence in design that can make the world a better more sustainable place.”

Peter’s 25 years of award-winning experience includes work on a wide range of sustainable architecture projects from an “off the grid” townhouse development in the ‘90s to his own green roof low-energy laneway house to a South African community library built from discarded shipping containers. As project architect or sustainability lead, he has overseen the design of over 20 LEED schools, community centres, libraries, high performance sport venues, university buildings, and high-rise mixed-use developments.

At larger scales, his experience includes delivering sustainable design standards, campus plans and even the design of a new urban precinct integrated into a re-naturalized flood resilient river delta. Most recently, he was the project architect and sustainable design lead for a net zero carbon, low energy, LEED Platinum, WELL Silver mass timber headquarters building for the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.
