Building a Digital Delivery Workforce for the Transportation of Tomorrow

HDR’s Alexa Mitchell and Jennifer Steen Discuss BIM Training and Outreach in Transportation Builder Magazine

Designing tomorrow’s transportation infrastructure demands familiarity with rapidly evolving tools and processes. Transportation agencies and contractors are upskilling current employees to apply their expertise to new building information modeling (BIM) applications. And the industry is invested in helping the next generation of professionals begin their careers with the right foundation in digital delivery tools. 

Alexa Mitchell is HDR’s transportation BIM program manager, and Jennifer Steen is highway and local roads BIM director. Both help clients plan and implement BIM strategies across their organizations. The two collaborated on a recent article in Transportation Builder, a publication of the American Road & Transportation Builders Association. Mitchell and Steen wrote about the importance of building a strong digital delivery workforce for the coming decades, and they described some of the strategies being implemented across the U.S. 

“Realizing the benefits of BIM and model-based delivery depends on a workforce that can use these tools,” the authors wrote. “Some forward-thinking agencies are showing the way, with training initiatives and education efforts aimed at both current and future workers.”
