How to Create Well-Lit, Well-Used Spaces With the Right Lighting

Lobby and atrium of Hubbard Center, Omaha, Nebraska, USA. Innovative ceiling lighting design.

The integration of lighting and architecture has always been an imperative aspect of design. However, developing innovative creative spaces with lighting demands another level of finesse, dedication and cost control.

Innovation in design comes with careful integration with architecture and lighting fixtures that are customized for the environment. Research, behavioural, and healthcare lighting pose challenges for designers with respect to stringent requirements and constraints. The advancement of light–emitting diode (LED) technology and the flexibility of the minimal systems, provide a new palette of design opportunities that can be integrated within these facilities.

Anne Ullestad, senior lighting designer, and Paul Daniel, lighting design section manager, recently appeared on the Consulting–Specifying Engineer podcast, discussing various lighting applications for healthcare and office environments. In this episode, they discuss how to achieve creative lighting strategies, while exploring case studies for different building typologies and the tools required for successful design. Paul and Anne also explore the use of various lighting technologies and how they are applicable to the different types of facilities and their requirements.
