Kannapolis to Concord Pipeline Now Operational in North Carolina
Project Marks a Milestone for Energy Reliability

HDR is proud to celebrate that the Kannapolis to Concord System Pipeline Expansion Project in North Carolina is now in service. As a lead consultant to the utility Enbridge Gas North Carolina, HDR played a key role in the construction of the 24-mile pipeline that will help enhance energy reliability, meet growing demand and expand natural gas services for thousands of homes and businesses in the rapidly developing areas northeast of Charlotte.
HDR’s multidisciplinary team provided environmental services, geotechnical engineering, land surveying, land acquisition, data management and non-environmental permitting support. Early engagement with landowners and stakeholders helped streamline the permitting process and minimize construction impacts.
“This is a proud moment for everyone involved,” said Chad Jacobs, project manager at HDR. “Placing the pipeline into service reflects the dedication, innovation and collaboration that have defined this project from the start.”
"Projects like these depend on innovative thinking in addition to intentional coordination, communication and collaboration," said Mike Lewis, Enbridge Gas North Carolina's project manager. "With partners like HDR, experienced designers and a strong work ethic from all teams, we were able to complete the Kannapolis to Concord System Expansion Project successfully and bring natural gas to underserved communities, all while minimizing environmental and community impacts."
A standout innovation was HDR’s use of ArcGIS for AutoCAD, which enabled more than 40 team members to collaborate in real time, synchronize design changes and streamline workflows. HDR earned an Integration Award from Esri, a global leader in GIS and mapping software.
With the pipeline now in service, HDR will continue to support Enbridge Gas North Carolina on projects throughout the state.
