The Instrument Development Facility at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center enables scientists and engineers to push the boundaries of science, space, and our understanding of the universe. 

The two-story facility, equipped with a roof-level mechanical penthouse, fosters enhanced collaboration and efficiencies among scientific research and engineering staff. Centralized laboratory cores on both floors feature service corridors surrounded by a racetrack of circulation, flanked by two office bars on each side of the building. These office spaces are divided into “neighborhoods,” or working team zones, with a mix of private and open offices, collaboration zones, and conference rooms, whose transparency adds visual interest as people circulate the building. 

To promote movement and wellness on campus, the facility offers quick access to the surrounding bike path and ample outdoor seating options, encouraging employees to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible. 

The contextually responsive architectural design supports mission-driven research, provides maximum long-term planning flexibility, and integrates sustainable performance into the site and facility design, which is Net Zero Energy capable and achieves LEED Gold certification.
