Orlando Health Medical Pavilion at Institute Square
A Gemstone Embedded in a Community
With its gleaming façade, the Orlando Health Medical Pavilion at Institute Square establishes an iconic presence in downtown St. Petersburg, offering outpatient cancer care to the surrounding community. Conceived as a “gem piece,” the project reflects striking, detailed design while reinforcing Orlando Health’s commitment to high-quality, locally accessible care. Its prominent location strengthens connections to nearby neighborhoods and expands access to coordinated health services across the Tampa Bay region.
Establishing Campus Identity
The Medical Pavilion is part of Orlando Health’s Institute Square, an integrated health care campus that also includes a Women’s Pavilion and a five-level parking structure with imaging and laboratory services at street level.
At the Medical Pavilion’s upper levels, glass cladding on tapered corners creates a chiseled, gemstone appearance in the Florida sunlight. Rhythmic frit patterns temper solar glare while introducing texture and depth to the façade. At the ground level, recessed and shaded outdoor zones float over entries while stone panels anchor the building within the neighborhood context.
The landscaping harmonizes the Medical Pavilion with the rest of the campus and community, with improved sidewalks and pedestrian pathways that organize the courtyard into smaller, more serene gardens tailored to specific patient populations.
Key design features include:
- AHCA-reviewed and approved oncology services, including radiation therapy
- Site planning that separates patient, staff, service and transport circulation for clarity and efficiency
- Adaptable clinical pod layout maximizes operational efficiency and supports long-term flexibility
- Centralized staff cores reduce travel distances and provide direct visibility, while exam rooms are positioned along the exterior to maximize daylight and patient comfort
- Lean design principles guided the programming strategy to use space efficiently without limiting future adaptability
- Topaz- and sapphire-colored interior finishes reinforce design theme and foster continuity, clarity and warmth
Brighter Sunshine on the Horizon
The Medical Pavilion delivers a flexible outpatient oncology environment that balances operational performance with patient-centered care. Thoughtful planning, adaptable clinic modules and restorative outdoor spaces support a seamless experience for patients, caregivers and staff alike. As a defining element of Institute Square, the project stands as a symbol of renewal and a brighter future for downtown St. Petersburg.
