BeiGene Guangzhou Laboratory

BeiGene Biotech, a growing company specializing in cancer-treating drug development, was looking to build a new laboratory on an extremely tight site on the biotech island in Guangzhou, China. With our deep experience in designing multitudes of laboratory spaces and our consultation with the client, HDR delivered a dynamic building that emphasizes transparency, display and flexibility for BeiGene to continue its important research in a state-of-the-art environment.

The facility houses four major program components including biology, chemistry, production and vivarium spaces. These research areas will play an important role in creating a comprehensive industrial chain of preclinical research and development, clinical development, commercialized production and sales in Guangzhou.

To maximize flexibility, laboratory areas are laid out in modules and after studying client practices, other building components such as write-up areas and offices were carefully placed adjacent to each other and made easily accessible to the labs. This allowed for transparency, collaboration and flow throughout the interior design.

To fit the site, our team adapted three ovals that activated the surrounding space, creating a multi-layered image where all three ovals have their own character. The central collaboration hub features crisp color vertical circulation with rational laboratory wings on each side.
